Renowned lawyer and human rights advocate, Chidi Odinkalu, has raised concerns over the involvement of Supreme Court Justice Emmanuel Agim in the unfolding political crisis in Rivers State, particularly regarding the declaration of a state of emergency.

In a series of tweets, Odinkalu pointed out that Justice Agim, who chaired the controversial Supreme Court judgment on February 28, 2025, leading to the state of emergency, may have been present at an event where Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Calabar (UNICAL).

Sharing a photograph from the ceremony, Odinkalu questioned whether the justice had accompanied Wike to the event, suggesting possible political interference.

“Emmanuel Agim – 1st left in the pic on the right (unless I am mistaken) was the @SupremeCourtNg Justice who wrote the judgment of 28 Feb 2025 leading to the #SoE in Rivers State.”

“Did he accompany @GovWike to @Unical1975 for this event? Supreme Court justice is now an accessory?!” Odinkalu tweeted.

The ceremony, held as part of UNICAL’s 50th anniversary and 37th convocation, was attended by several dignitaries, including the Senate President, the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, lawmakers, and traditional rulers such as the 15th Emir of Kano, Emir Bayero, who also serves as the university’s Chancellor.
