I have no regrets not choosing Wike as running mate – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has made it clear that he has “no regrets” for overlooking Federal Capital Territory Minister and ex-Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, as his running mate in the 2023 presidential election.
Atiku, who lost the keenly contested election to President Bola Tinubu, made this revelation during an interview on Untold Stories with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie, set to air today.
The rift between Atiku and Wike dates back to the 2022 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries, where Wike fiercely contested for the presidential ticket but lost to Atiku.
Following his defeat, Wike expected to be named Atiku’s running mate, but the former vice president instead chose ex-Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
This decision deepened divisions within the PDP, leading to internal conflicts that weakened the party’s chances in the election.
Speaking on why he picked Okowa over Wike, Atiku explained that he allowed the PDP to handle the selection process.
“They said I did not consult widely in 2019 when I picked Peter Obi as my running mate,” Atiku said.
“So in 2023, I told the party to set up a committee to recommend three names.”
According to him, the committee ranked Okowa first, Wike second, and former Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel third.
“So I picked number one,” he said firmly.
When asked if he had any regrets about the decision, Atiku was unapologetic.
“No, not at all,” he stated.
Wike, known for his outspoken and confrontational political style, has since distanced himself from Atiku and the PDP hierarchy.
His growing alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and his appointment as FCT Minister under Tinubu’s administration have further solidified his departure from Atiku’s camp.
Many within the PDP believe Wike and his G5 allies played a crucial role in Atiku’s defeat by refusing to support his candidacy.
As Atiku reportedly prepares for another shot at the presidency in 2027, the unresolved PDP crisis continues to pose challenges, while Wike strengthens his influence within Tinubu’s government.
