Ogun Woman, Daughter jailed for stealing Ponmo

An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo has sentenced a woman, Falilatu Amidu, and her daughter, Ayisatu Amidu, to six months in jail for stealing dried ponmo (cow skin), stock fish, and dried meat worth N1 million.
However, the court offered them an option of a N5,000 fine, provided they each refund N100,000 to the complainant as restitution before paying the fine.
The duo, residents of the Ago-Oko area in Abeokuta, were convicted on charges of conspiracy and stealing.
Magistrate O.O. Odumosu ruled that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Prosecutor Insp. Kehinde Fawunmi told the court that the offence occurred in August 2024 at Lafenwa Market. He explained that Falilatu, who used to assist the complainant, Mrs. Kafayat Alao, in carrying goods from her store, conspired with her daughter to steal a large sack containing the stolen items.
Fawunmi recounted that Mrs. Alao had asked Falilatu to help her retrieve goods from the store. When she did not return after an hour, Alao went to check, only to find both Falilatu and the bag of goods missing.
Following investigations, the duo was apprehended and subsequently convicted.
