La Liga: Lewandowski’s double fires Barca back to top

Robert Lewandowski showcased his goal-scoring prowess with a brilliant double as Barcelona cruised to a convincing victory over Girona at the Olympic Stadium, reclaiming their three-point cushion at the top of La Liga.  

Barcelona asserted their dominance early on when Ladislav Krejci inadvertently put the ball into his own net, giving the hosts a first-half lead.

Despite the setback, Girona found a way back into the game when Arnaut Danjuma capitalized on a defensive slip to level the score early in the second half.

However, Lewandowski wasted no time in restoring Barcelona’s advantage, netting a clever finish just after the hour mark.

The Polish striker then wrapped up the victory with his 25th league goal of the season, following an exquisite setup from substitute Frenkie de Jong.

Ferran Torres added the final flourish with a low, composed strike into the bottom corner, sealing an emphatic win for the Catalan giants.

It was the perfect response from Barcelona, who watched their great foes Real Madrid fight back to beat Leganes and move level on points at the summit of the Spanish top flight on Saturday.

Flick’s team have now won their past nine matches in La Liga and will head into Wednesday’s second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final with Atletico Madrid – finely balanced at 4-4 – full of confidence.
