Following widespread public outrage over the brutal killing of hunters returning to the North in Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo has taken decisive action by suspending the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.).

Additionally, the governor has disbanded all unauthorized vigilante groups operating within the state.

The decision was disclosed in a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhikor Esq., who also revealed that 14 suspects had been apprehended in connection with the attack.

“After reviewing the preliminary report on the unfortunate incident of Thursday, March 27, 2025, at Uromi in Esan North East Local Government Area, which led to the gruesome killing of some travelers, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the immediate suspension of all illegal vigilante groups operating under any guise in Edo State.

Also suspended is the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.),” the statement read. The government clarified that the vigilante group responsible for the attack was not registered under the Edo State Security Corps and operated illegally.

It stressed that their actions did not align with the values of the Okpebholo administration or the objectives of the state security law. With investigations still ongoing, security forces have intensified their search for other suspects, while a special team set up by the Inspector General of Police leads the operation.

Governor Okpebholo reassured Nigerians of the state’s commitment to protecting constitutional rights, including free movement and lawful business activities. “The Edo State Government believes in the constitutionally guaranteed rights of citizens to move freely or engage in lawful business in any part of the country,” the statement emphasized.

The government has also reached out to the families of the victims, community leaders, and the Kano State Government, as most of the deceased were from Kano.

Assuring the public of swift and transparent justice, the state urged all affected parties to remain calm while authorities handle the matter decisively.
