Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has declared a state of emergency in public schools across the state, citing their poor condition as a major concern.

During a visit to schools in Ikpoba-Okha and Egor local government areas on Tuesday, Okpebholo expressed disappointment over the dilapidated state of urban schools, emphasizing that Edo children deserve a better learning environment.

He recalled his campaign promise to tackle the lack of modern facilities and a conducive atmosphere for learning, stating that he was now taking action.

At Army Day Secondary School in Ikpoba-Okha and Evbareke Secondary School in Egor, the governor lamented the conditions under which students were forced to learn.

“I feel bad about the state of the schools I inspected today. The conditions are unacceptable for our children.

“When campaigning, I promised to declare a state of emergency in Edo schools. I will start from Evbareke Secondary School and Army Day Secondary School.

“From tomorrow, work will begin at these schools. These schools have no fence, and erosion has washed away the road leading to Army Day Secondary School.

“The road to Army Day Secondary School, Boundary Road, leads to Temboga. It’s in a very poor state, affecting our children’s access to education,” Okpebholo stated.

Edo State Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, explained that the governor’s visit aimed to understand the challenges students face and find solutions.

“The governor is here to see the students’ plight firsthand and ensure every child in Edo has access to quality education. He is committed to practical governance that delivers real change,” Iyamu said.

He further assured that Okpebholo’s administration would prioritize inclusive education for all Edo children, including those with disabilities.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Mary Izewingie, the Vice Principal of Students’ Affairs at Evbareke Secondary School, informed the governor that the situation had remained unchanged since 2022, despite several complaints.

“We cried out for help, but nobody listened. Learning has been difficult for our students. We even tried to make repairs, but the rains ruined our efforts,” she said.

With the governor’s intervention, urgent rehabilitation is expected to commence immediately. (NAN)
