Italian Cup: Referees to announce VAR decisions to fans
Serie A has announced that referees will explain VAR decisions to both fans in the stadium and viewers at home during the Italian Cup semi-finals and final.
The initiative will be tested in the two-legged semi-finals, which include a highly anticipated Milan derby, as well as the final in May.
Officials will use audio technology to communicate the reasoning behind decisions made after on-field reviews.
This means that whenever a referee is prompted by the VAR control room to check a pitch-side monitor, they will then explain their final decision to the audience.
Serie A fixtures will also from this weekend feature “VARDict”, which “informs fans via the big screens at stadiums of a decision being revised by VAR or long VAR check”.
