Gunmen attack Police Stations in Enugu, kill Officer, steal weapons

Gunmen have attacked the Awgu Divisional Police Headquarters in Enugu State, killing a police constable identified as Akpa Emmanuel.
According to sources, the attack occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2025. The assailants reportedly vandalized facilities at the station and made away with weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and two riot guns.
The attack has heightened tension in Awgu town, with heavy security presence as spy agents and operatives take over the area to prevent further incidents.
Reacting to the attack, the new Commissioner of Police in Enugu, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, deployed the Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Special Forces, the Police Mobile Force (PMF), the Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU), and other tactical teams to reinforce security at the station.
This incident comes just weeks after a new Divisional Police Officer was posted to the Awgu station.
In a related development, gunmen also attacked the Inyi Divisional Police Headquarters in Oji-River Local Government Area around 2:00 a.m. on the same day. However, security operatives successfully repelled the attack, and no casualties or damage were reported.
Efforts by ThisDay Nigeria to obtain a response from the Enugu State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, did not respond to calls or text messages seeking comment.
