Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has stated that democracy has collapsed in Nigeria.

Obi made this comment at the 60th birthday colloquium of former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, in Abuja.

The event took place at the Ladi Kwali Hall of the Abuja Continental Hotel and was chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, with Bishop Matthew Kukah delivering the keynote address.

When asked why he believed democracy in Nigeria was failing, Obi explained:

“Well, if you look at what Bishop Kukah said, he said it’s work in progress. Let me follow my brother when he said about 1999.”

“If you look at where we are today, they stated in 1999, lay the foundation, some people came and took ot to decking, and some people were trying to raise it first floor, and some people came and knock everything down.

“That is the situation we are now, everything has been knock down”.

Reflecting on his impeachment as Anambra State governor, Obi recalled, “When I was being impeached, the president sent people to intervene on my behalf, begging the House members not to impeach me. Today, the president is the one impeaching people.”

Obi further noted that when he was impeached, Yar’Adua sent the military to the airport to receive him. “If it were now, the president would have asked me not to return at all,” he added.

He concluded by saying, “lets talk about how we are going to rebuild it, its collapsing.
