Pandemonium as Hausa, Gbagyi Communities clash in Niger

Fresh violence has erupted between the Hausa and Gbagyi communities in Chimbi, a village in Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State, over a land dispute.
Videos and images circulating online show parts of the community in flames, with gunshots ringing out in the background.
As of Sunday afternoon, the number of casualties and the extent of the damage remain unclear.
The Gbagyi people, indigenous to Niger State, have a long history of land-related conflicts, often involving Fulani herders.
Similar clashes have occurred in the past, including a violent confrontation in July 2016 in Bosso LGA that left four people dead and displaced hundreds.
More recently, in August 2024, a dispute in the Beji district led to multiple casualties and heightened tensions between local communities.
More to follow.
