The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja for the latest hearing in his ongoing trial for alleged treason.

This session marked a transition in the case, with Justice James Omotosho now presiding over proceedings.

Kanu’s legal team also witnessed a leadership change, as senior lawyer Kanu Agabi (SAN) took over as the new lead counsel, while the prosecution continues to be led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).

At the start of the hearing, Agabi addressed the court, offering an apology on behalf of Kanu.

He acknowledged past tensions in the case and expressed regrets to Justice Binta Nyako, the prosecution team, and Kanu’s previous legal representatives.

He admitted that Kanu had been angry for a long time and that some criticisms directed at Justice Nyako were unwarranted.

Agabi also extended an apology to the prosecution and the chairman of the Body of Benchers, recognizing their esteemed positions.

Describing Kanu as a “good man,” Agabi emphasized the need to focus on resolution rather than conflict, urging all parties to allow room for human errors.

In response, the prosecution accepted the apology and assured that efforts would be made to fast-track the trial. Awomolo acknowledged the emotional and legal complexities surrounding the case, noting the pressures involved.

Justice Omotosho also weighed in on the matter, highlighting the toll the prolonged trial may have taken on Kanu. He pointed out that Kanu, who was 47 years old when the trial began in 2015, is now 57 and remains uncertain about his future.

The judge suggested that the lengthy legal battle could have influenced some of Kanu’s previous statements.

Additionally, Justice Omotosho extended an apology to the prosecution on Kanu’s behalf, signaling a possible shift toward a more conciliatory approach in the proceedings.
