Imo Police arrest Lawyer for shooting teenage student to death

The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 64-year-old Barrister Donald Mbamah for allegedly shooting and killing 16-year-old Paul Victor, a student of Urban Development Secondary School, Owerri.
According to the Imo Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, the tragic incident occurred on Monday, March 17, 2025, at around 12:34 PM at Mbamah’s residence in Area N, World Bank, New Owerri.
Witnesses reported that the deceased had jumped over the fence into the suspect’s compound to retrieve a football when he was shot in the buttocks. He was rushed to the General Hospital in Umuguma but was pronounced dead on March 20, 2025.
Police officers from the New Owerri Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), swiftly responded to a distress call from a concerned neighbor who heard the gunshot. They arrested the suspect and took the victim to the hospital.
The police have since transferred Mbamah to the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning while efforts are being made to recover the firearm allegedly used in the shooting. Officers also took photographs at the crime scene as part of their investigation.
In an official statement, the Imo State Police Command expressed condolences to the victim’s family and assured the public that justice would be served. “The suspect will be arraigned in court once investigations are completed and sufficient evidence is gathered,” the statement read.
The police also urged the public to remain calm and allow the authorities to handle the case through legal means instead of resorting to vigilante justice.
