PDP suffers another setback as Two Lawmakers dump party for APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered another setback as two of its members in the House of Representatives, Husseini Jallo (Igabi Federal Constituency, Kaduna State) and Adamu Tanko (Suleja/Tafa/Gurara Federal Constituency, Niger State), defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday.

Their defection was announced in a letter read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during plenary. Jallo cited the “perennial crisis” in the PDP as the reason for his move, stating that the instability in the party had hindered his ability to serve his constituents effectively.

He also praised the leadership style of the Speaker and expressed confidence in the APC as a better platform for his political career.

Similarly, Tanko said his decision to join the APC came after extensive consultations with political stakeholders in his constituency.

This marks the second defection from the PDP in Kaduna in recent weeks, following the exit of Amos Magaji.

Reacting to the development, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda raised concerns over the legality of the defections, citing a Supreme Court ruling that mandates a complete and justified defection process. He called for the affected seats to be declared vacant if due process was not followed.

Deputy Minority Leader Ali Isa also condemned the defections, insisting that the lawmakers should either withdraw their letters or face legal action.

“The PDP remains strong both as a party and as an opposition. There is no crisis in the PDP. The defecting members must take the path of honor by resigning their positions and returning to seek fresh elections from their constituents,” Isa stated.
