Nigeria’s World Cup dreams in jeopardy as Sudan eyes historic qualification

As the 2026 World Cup qualifiers hit the halfway stage, Nigeria and Sudan are facing crucial moments in their bid for a spot in the tournament.

The Super Eagles, once considered favorites to dominate Group C, have fallen short of expectations and now sit fifth in the six-team group.

Despite having top talents like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, Nigeria has struggled, managing only draws against Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, along with a disappointing loss to Benin.

Following their second-place finish at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria has seen three coaching changes, Finidi George, Augustine Eguavoen, and now Eric Chelle.

Chelle, who was dismissed by Mali after a poor World Cup start, acknowledges the challenge ahead. With upcoming matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, he hopes to turn things around by capitalizing on Nigeria’s attacking strength.

Meanwhile, Sudan has emerged as the unexpected leader of Group B despite being initially seeded fifth.

The team is now set for a crucial clash with Senegal as they chase their first-ever World Cup qualification.

However, due to ongoing civil unrest, the match will take place in Libya, highlighting the difficult situation in Sudan, where war has displaced millions.

Key Matches on Matchday Five

Ethiopia vs Egypt: Egypt, led by stars like Mohamed Salah and Mahmoud Trezeguet, will play Ethiopia in Morocco due to Ethiopia’s lack of a FIFA-approved stadium.

Sudan vs Senegal: Sudan faces a tough test against Senegal, who will rely on Sadio Mane. However, Senegal will be without Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson due to injury.

Rwanda vs Nigeria: Nigeria cannot afford to underestimate Rwanda, especially after suffering a shock defeat to them in a previous Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Gambia vs Kenya: Benni McCarthy makes his debut as Kenya’s coach, leading the Harambee Stars against Gambia in a must-win away fixture.

Ghana vs Chad: Ghana, recovering from a shocking loss to Comoros, must secure a win against Chad before facing a tougher challenge against Madagascar.

As the qualifiers progress, teams will need to show resilience and determination in their quest for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
