Vatican releases first photo of Pope Francis since hospitalisation

The Vatican has released the first image of Pope Francis since his hospitalisation over a month ago, showing him celebrating mass from the chapel in his hospital suite at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome.

The 88-year-old pope, who has been receiving treatment for pneumonia in both lungs, appeared in the photo bare-headed, dressed in a white robe and a purple stole, seated in a wheelchair in front of a simple altar.

Acknowledging His Fragile Health

Since his hospital admission on February 14, Pope Francis has not been seen in public, missing key religious events, including Sunday masses at St. Peter’s Basilica. However, in his Angelus message published by the Vatican, he expressed gratitude for the prayers and well wishes, acknowledging his frail condition.

“I am sharing these thoughts with you while I am facing a period of trial, and I join with so many brothers and sisters who are sick: fragile, at this time, like me,” the pope wrote.

Despite his illness, he encouraged believers to remain steadfast in faith, love, and prayer during this Lenten season leading up to Easter.

Ongoing Treatment & Well-Wishers Gather

The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis’ condition remains stable, but he still requires medical therapy. Despite his absence from public appearances, crowds of supporters, tango dancers, and children have gathered outside the hospital to show their support.

A group of Argentine tango dancers performed outside the hospital, hoping to lift his spirits, while young scouts and children from Naples visited to offer prayers and letters of encouragement.

“He loves children, he is the pope of the children, so we are waiting for him. We’re sure he will get better,” said Andrea Lacomini, a UNICEF representative.

Easter Preparations & Message of Peace

With Easter approaching, concerns remain over whether Pope Francis will be able to participate in the Holy Week celebrations. In his latest message, he called for peace in war-torn nations, including Ukraine, Myanmar, and Sudan, while also offering condolences to victims of a nightclub fire in North Macedonia.

Despite his ongoing health challenges, Pope Francis remains hopeful and committed to his mission, reassuring his followers:

“The pope loves you and is always waiting to meet you.”
