DSTV, GOTV tariff hike: Top 5 affordable alternatives to keep you going

The rising cost of Pay-TV services in Nigeria has driven many consumers to seek alternative entertainment options.
Between May 2023 and March 2025, the price of DStv’s premium package surged by 53%, while the GoTV Supa Plus saw a 34.4% increase.
This continuous price hike has left many subscribers frustrated, with some considering more affordable alternatives.
In February 2025, MultiChoice announced yet another price adjustment for its DStv and GOtv packages, set to take effect from March 1, 2025.
According to a statement released by the company, the increment is necessary to sustain its delivery of “world-class homegrown and international content.”
New DStv and GOtv Prices
With the latest hike, MultiChoice has adjusted the prices of its packages as follows:
DStv Premium: N44,500 (up from N29,500 in 2023)
DStv Compact Plus: N30,000 (previously N21,000)
DStv Compact: N19,000 (up from N15,700)
GOtv Jinja: N3,900 (from N3,600)
GOtv Jolli: N5,800 (previously N4,850)
GOtv Max: N8,500
GOtv Supa: N11,400
GOtv Supa Plus: N16,800
MultiChoice attributes the price adjustments to Nigeria’s challenging economic climate, citing inflation, currency depreciation, and increasing operational costs.
However, the move has sparked backlash, with many subscribers voicing concerns over affordability and service quality.
Affordable Alternatives to DStv and GOtv
In response to these rising costs, Nigerians are exploring cost-effective alternatives that provide entertainment without breaking the bank. Some of these include:
1. YouTube
As a free platform, YouTube offers a wide variety of content, from live sports and news to music and movies.
With an estimated 10 million active users in Nigeria, its popularity is expected to grow further. Users only need a data subscription to access its vast content library.
2. Android TV Box
Devices such as Mi Box S, Nvidia Shield TV, and H96 Max allow users to stream content on-demand. Subscription costs range from N3,000 to N30,000 annually, depending on the provider.
However, a stable internet connection is required for seamless streaming.
3. SLTV
SLTV, operated by Metro Digital Limited, provides satellite TV services in Nigeria at an affordable price.
With a monthly subscription of N2,500 to N5,000, users gain access to over 50 HD channels, including 10 sports channels broadcasting live football from top leagues like the Premier League, La Liga, and the UEFA Champions League.
4. IPTV (Internet Protocol Television)
IPTV services offer live TV and on-demand content without relying on traditional satellite or cable setups.
Subscriptions can start as low as N1,000, giving users access to thousands of local and international channels. However, a fast and stable internet connection is necessary for optimal performance.
5. Amazon Fire Stick
This streaming device plugs into a TV’s HDMI port, allowing users to access platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+.
While there’s no monthly fee for the device itself, additional streaming subscriptions may be required for premium content.
