A deadly tanker explosion on the Otedola Bridge in Lagos has left one person dead and three others with severe burns.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, involved a petrol-laden tanker that burst into flames, causing panic among residents and motorists.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the casualty figures, stating that emergency teams swiftly responded to the scene.

“Three adult male victims with severe burns have been rescued and transferred to Gbagada General Hospital burns unit, while the remains of an adult male were also recovered,” said LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu.

Efforts to completely extinguish the fire continued into Wednesday morning, with firefighters battling lingering flames.

The aftermath of the explosion left a trail of destruction, with burnt vehicles and tricycles scattered across the area.

Nearby buildings, including a church, a residential house, and mechanic workshops, were also severely damaged.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the road had been cordoned off to prevent further casualties.

“A tanker has fallen and caught fire, affecting nearby structures at Otedola Under Bridge, adjacent to CMD Road,” LASTMA stated on X.

The agency also warned against reckless driving near the fire scene, cautioning that such actions could put more lives at risk.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service reported that the explosion resulted from a 30-tonne DAF gas truck accident, which occurred around 8:00 PM.

Emergency responders, including police officers, firefighters, and LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team, remain on the ground to manage the crisis and ensure public safety.

Motorists have been advised to take alternative routes as traffic in the area remains heavily affected by the incident.
