Tinubu defends fuel subsidy removal, Says it secures future for unborn generations

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed that the removal of fuel subsidy was a necessary step to safeguard the future of unborn generations in Nigeria.
Speaking at the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tinubu emphasized his administration’s focus on youth empowerment and long-term economic stability.
“I’ve listened to you carefully, today is not for long speeches, I just want to reassure you that you are the hope of the country. Every decision I’ve taken is all about tomorrow,” Tinubu said.
According to the President, the removal of fuel subsidies is a strategic move to ensure investment in infrastructure and economic growth, which would discourage Nigerian youths from seeking opportunities abroad.
“When you listen to professionals talking about Japa, leaving Nigeria, it’s because if you grow prosperity back home and you empower people, they will not bother to leave. This is your home, to develop, build, and make prosper,” he added.
Highlighting economic progress, Tinubu stated that the country’s financial outlook is improving, with inflation stabilizing and investor confidence rising.
“When we started, it looked so foggy, dicey, and hopeless. We tried hard, and we were fetching water from a dry well. But today, the economy has turned the corner, prices are falling, confidence in our economy is improving, investors are looking in, and technology is advancing,” he noted.
During the event, Tinubu urged the youth to actively contribute ideas for national development, assuring them of his government’s willingness to listen and implement viable solutions.
“Look at me in the face, tell me whatever you think is wrong and the way you want things done or suggestions. We’ll try to implement all of it as long as it is for the prosperity of this country,” he said.
Meanwhile, Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, assured that the youth congress would serve as a platform for young Nigerians to engage in governance and policymaking.
The committee, which includes representatives from various ministries, civil society organizations, and international bodies like the World Bank, is expected to plan a conference that will shape policies affecting Nigerian youth.
A lead committee member and Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, commended President Tinubu for his commitment to youth inclusion in governance.
