El-Rufai reportedly dumps APC, set to announce new party

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has allegedly resigned his membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing dissatisfaction with the ruling party’s direction.
Reports circulating on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), suggest that El-Rufai submitted his resignation letter to his ward in Kaduna State on Monday, March 10, 2025.
In the letter, he reportedly expressed disappointment over the APC’s deviation from its founding principles.
According to a publication by obtained by our correspondent, El-Rufai highlighted his past commitment to education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development.
However, he lamented that the APC had, in his view, abandoned democratic ideals and progressive governance.
“I have diligently served the APC and contributed to its viability, but recent developments over the past two years have confirmed a troubling disregard for the democratic principles and progressive values I hold dear,” he was quoted as saying.
Declaring his allegiance to the SDP, El-Rufai urged like-minded Nigerians to join him in building the party into a credible alternative.
He also expressed appreciation to his mentors, colleagues, and supporters while reaffirming his commitment to Nigeria’s democratic growth.
With this reported move, El-Rufai positions himself as a key political figure ahead of the 2027 elections, as the SDP seeks to strengthen its influence as an opposition party.
As of the time of this report, El-Rufai has not issued any official statement confirming or denying the escalating reports.
