Another Rivers Electoral Commissioner resigns, cites Supreme Court verdict

Ibierembo Evelyn Thompson, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) Commissioner for Transport, Logistics, and Stores, has resigned from her position.

In her resignation letter dated March 9, 2025, Thompson cited the recent Supreme Court judgment that nullified the October 5, 2024, local government elections in Rivers State as the main reason for her departure.

She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and wished the commission success in its future activities.

Her resignation comes at a time of heightened political tension in the state.

The Rivers State House of Assembly, dominated by lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, has intensified its demands on Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The lawmakers recently gave RSIEC Chairman Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Retd.) a 72-hour ultimatum to appear before them over the annulled elections and other unresolved issues.
