The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abia State has confirmed that four people lost their lives while 14 others sustained injuries in a crash along the Umuahia-Enugu Expressway.

Abia Sector Commander, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeoma, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, revealing that the accident occurred at the Ohiya Mechanic area of the expressway on Friday at 2:01 p.m.

According to Ezeoma, preliminary investigations suggest that the crash was caused by a burst tyre and excessive speeding, which led to the vehicle somersaulting multiple times. She added that FRSC crash investigation experts would conduct further analysis to determine any other contributing factors.

The accident involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus belonging to Ebonyi Transport Corporation, carrying 11 male adults and seven female adults. One female passenger died at the scene, while 17 others were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Umuahia. Sadly, two male adults and another female adult later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, bringing the total fatalities to four, two men and two women.

Ezeoma expressed her condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery. She reassured the public of the FRSC’s commitment to road safety and urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies.
